Undergraduate

Top
Applicants
will be considered for admission on the basis of equivalent
senior matriculation, the completion of at least 12 years
of secondary schooling and satisfactory standing in five
distinct and appropriate subjects (to include English and
at least three other academic subjects). Applicants whose
educational documents are in a language other than English
or French must provide official transcripts which list subjects
studied and final grades achieved as well as notarized English
translations.
Depending
on what program you are applying for the specific academic
subjects required may differ. For example, Engineering requires
English 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, and Mathematics 30
(Algebra and Geometry) and Mathematics 31 (calculus).
Courses numbered 30 mean 3 consecutive years of a studying
a course in secondary school.
Normally
students require an average equivalent to 70%
to be admitted, in some faculties the average is higher.

1st
year students entering all programs, with the exception
of Engineering, Fine Arts, Nursing and Kinesiology,
apply to the Faculty of General Studies where they do their
first one or two years of prerequisite courses. The
Bachelor degree normally takes four years to complete, including
the first year or two in General Studies.

The
following credentials are used as a guideline to
determine admissibility:
AMERICAN
HIGH SCHOOLS: Applicants from American high schools
will only be considered on the basis of acceptable scores
on the Verbal and Mathematical Scholastic Aptitude Tests
(SAT I) and three appropriate SAT II Tests (SAT II) which
are administered by the Admissions Testing Program of the
College Board. Applicants under this category
are required to have twelve years of schooling and must
present proof of a high school diploma.
AUSTRALIA:

General Certificates of Education (GCE)

Five
distinct and appropriate G.C.E. subjects with at least two
at the Advanced (or Principal) level are required.
Any subject presented at both the Advanced and Ordinary
levels will not be considered as two distinct subjects.
General Certificate of Secondary Education (G.C.S.E.) subjects
is acceptable in lieu of Ordinary level subject. Two
Advances Supplementary (AS) subjects will be considered
in lieu of the second Advanced level subject. Provided
the AS subjects do not duplicate subject matter of Advanced
or Ordinary level. One AS subject will only be considered
in lieu of an Ordinary level subject. Grades of "D"
and "E" at the Ordinary, G.C.S.E. and AS levels and 7, 8,
and 9 on School certificates are not acceptable.
International
Baccalaureate
The
International Baccalaureate with standing in six distinct
and appropriate subjects (three Higher Level and three Subsidiary
Level subjects with grades of 4 or above) is acceptable
as senior matriculation. The University of Calgary
awards advanced placements for specific Higher Level subjects.
Official IB transcripts are required as part of the evaluation
process for advanced credit.
Undergraduate
Transfer Students
Top
If
you have previously attended an accredited post-secondary
institution you may be admitted with advanced credit to
a Bachelor’s program. Advanced credit for course work
completed at another post-secondary institution is determined
on a course-by-course basis by the International Admissions
Office.
- If
your transcripts are in a language other than English
or French you are required to provide notarized English
translations.
- You
are required to provide course outlines of all the courses
you have taken so they can be assessed for advance credit.
- To
qualify for a University of Calgary degree you must
normally complete a minimum of twenty half courses (4
semesters) at the University.
- If
you are from a country where English is not the first
language you will be required to provide proof of meeting
the English Language
Proficiency Requirements.
- Advance
credit can only be determined after you have
submitted an Application for Admission and provided
all necessary documentation.
Undergraduate
Exchange, Visiting, & Unclassified Students
Top
Many
international students are interested in joining the U of
C for one semester or term only as exchange or visiting
students, with the intent of returning to their home institution
to complete their degree. Students may also be interested
in attending the University as an unclassified student.
To attend the U of C in any of these categories you will
be required to meet all admission and English Language
Proficiency Requirements and go through the
complete application procedure.

Visiting
Students
If
you are interested in coming to the U of C as a visiting
student you will need the prior approval of your home institution
to ensure that the courses you take at U of C will be credited
towards your degree.
Unclassified
Non-Degree Student
In
some instances it is possible to register at the U of C
as a non-degree student for specific courses. Students
who do not yet have a degree are limited to 2 half-courses
per academic semester. This does not constitute full-time
enrollment and would not make students
eligible for a Student Authorization.
Undergraduate
Medicine (MD Program)
Top
The
Faculty of Medicine does not normally consider applications
from individual international students. Presently,
spaces for international students are limited to those students
who come from institutions and/or countries with whom the
Faculty of Medicine at the University Of Calgary has a formal
contractual agreement.
Graduate
Students (Master, Ph.D)
Top
The
University of Calgary offers graduate programs leading to
the Master and Ph.D degrees in most disciplines including
Law, Medicine, and Environmental Design. Applicants must
normally have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree, or its
equivalent, with a minimum grade point average of
3.0 based on a 4.0 point system over the past two years
of full-time study. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (written)
or 213 (computer) is required, however some departments
require a higher score. Admission to graduate programs
is competitive and deadlines for applications may differ
from one department to another.
- Students
interested in pursuing graduate studies are advised
to contact their department of interest as soon as possible
to determine the specific course requirements, application
deadlines and additional information required for admission

Department makes decisions on admission to graduate
programs and each department sends out its own application
form. They conduct a pre-screening of applicants
before they send out an application form.

U
of C program in Energy and the Environment offered in Ecuador,
South America.
OLADE:
The University of Calgary and the Latin American Energy
Organization (OLADE) jointly offer a 14-month Master of
Science degree in Energy and the Environment. The
University of Calgary confers the degree. The program,
offered in Quito, Ecuador, is open to students from all
over the world. Although most of the courses are taught
in English, competency in Spanish would be helpful.
The
program is for public and private sector technical and managerial
professionals from Government and energy enterprises.
Participants will acquire knowledge and develop skills which
are needed to effectively manage energy projects and operations
in accordance with sustainable development principles.
Admission
requirements for OLADE:
University
degree, preferably in Engineering or Science
Minimum Grade Point Average 3.0 out of 4.0
TOEFL 550 or IELTS 7.5
Three years of relevant energy/environment work experience.
Cost
of OLADE:
Tuition
and fees and all related costs for the 14-month program
are $10,000 US, living expenses are estimated
at approximately $7,000 US for the 14-month period.
